Schavemaker launches contract logistics and implements Arox Logistics IT’s WMS
In recent years,
Schavemaker has continued to develop as a logistics service provider offering a wide range of services. The company has recently started offering contract logistics in Moerdijk, which means it can now handle even more logistics tasks on behalf of its clients, in addition to warehousing and transport. This includes, for example, arranging sea freight or handling part of a client’s customer service. “We want to offer our customers a range of options to tackle the logistical challenges they face,” says Arnoud Paans, Logistics Development Manager at Schavemaker. Alongside the launch of the new services in Moerdijk, Arox Logistics IT’s WMS, Financial Management System (FMS) and Customs Management System (DMS) have been implemented.
“Challenge us!”
In just a few months, Schavemaker has already built up a sizeable client base that utilises contract logistics. “With this new service package, we effectively become an extension of the client’s logistics operations,” says Arnoud Paans. The current client base includes suppliers in sectors such as consumer goods (including household goods), the automotive sector, e-commerce, the solar industry, returns logistics and toys. With the slogan ‘Challenge us!’, Schavemaker emphasises that it always aims to offer a bespoke solution.
Speed as a distinguishing factor
To ensure the back-end contract logistics are properly organised, a partnership with Arox Logistics IT has been established. Schavemaker uses Arox’s Warehouse Management System (WMS) to manage the processes relating to stock control. This WMS is used in conjunction with Arox Logistics IT’s Financial Management System (FMS), which is used to map and monitor invoicing flows. The systems also function as management tools. Finally, the Customs Management System (DMS) has been added to this, which is linked to the WMS.
“The WMS, FMS and DMS from Arox Logistics IT help us tailor our services to our customers’ specific needs,” says Paans. “Arox has set up a system with a stable foundation that can be flexibly adapted to meet individual customer requirements. In a market where speed is key to standing out, that is crucial.”
The client’s logistics partner
The services provided vary from client to client. Sometimes they begin the moment a container or lorry arrives at the door. In such cases, Schavemaker handles, for example, unloading, inspections, storage and transport to various destinations. If goods need to be imported from abroad first, Schavemaker arranges for the freight to be transported to Moerdijk by sea, rail or lorry. “Every client has different requirements, and we tailor our approach to suit them each time. However, we do need a solid foundation to enable us to offer that flexibility,” says Paans. “The right staff and a well-functioning IT system are indispensable in this regard.”
Logistics software
The WMS records the following: incoming customer orders, outgoing orders and stock management. The logistics software always provides an up-to-date overview of stock levels, by quantity and by location. Any shortages are also recorded in the system. “We are currently working on further developments to make it as easy as possible for our customers to place their orders directly with us.” All incoming and outgoing orders are entered into the FMS. This process is partly automated. Following a brief explanation of the systems, the staff were able to get straight to work with them.
Arox Logistics IT employs software experts with many years’ experience in logistics. “In collaboration with Schavemaker, we have laid a solid and suitable foundation,” says Arno Bruining, owner of Arox Logistics IT. “The WMS, FMS and DMS are growing alongside Schavemaker; the systems are scalable. Furthermore, there is always scope for further development. We keep a close eye on the latest logistics trends and are constantly testing innovative solutions, including the use of drones and smart glasses.”
A stable foundation, yet always flexible
“We’re now seeing more and more customers with new requirements,” says Paans. “We need to adapt our working methods and our system accordingly. Think of pallets being split up, locations where part of a pallet needs to be sent, and serial numbers. More and more functionalities are being added.” Paans regularly discusses the adjustments and further development of the WMS and FMS with Arno Bruining and expects this to remain an ongoing process. “It’s great that we can adapt quickly and further develop the system from both sides. The following questions are central to both of us: How can you get more out of the system? What else can you offer your customers?”
Logistics of the Future
To establish its contract logistics operations effectively, Schavemaker has taken on a number of new staff. A new department has been set up in Moerdijk for this purpose under the name ‘Schavemaker Logistics Solutions’, which currently has 12 employees. “Together with our customers, we are first working to establish a sound foundation for this new service,” explains Paans. “Based on our experience over these first few months, we are certainly convinced that there remains a high demand for contract logistics.”
